A series of radio broadcasts through art spaces in now closed of regions of the world. Today Taus Makhacheva leads an audio tour her temporary studio.

Taus Makhacheva is an internationally renowned artist who works conceptually between video, sound, sculpture and installation. She addresses question of how values of artworks and collections is created and attributed. How are these translated or transformed when different cultures and traditions come into contact with each other?

Taus was born in Moscow and has cultural roots in the Caucasus region of Dagestan. She studied art in London and in Moscow. Her work has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Manifesta in Palermo and the Liverpool Biennial, among others. Solo exhibitions have taken place in The Tetly, Leeds or the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven. In her video Tightrop, the Dagestan tight rope walker Rasul Abakarov balances 61 copies of paintings from the collection of the Dagestan Museum of Fine Art named after P.S. Gamzatova over an abyss between two mountains in the Dagestan landscape. It was precisely this work that inspired Nicole Schweizer, curator at the Musée cantonal des Beaux-arts Lausanne (MCBA), to invite Taus Makhacheva for the opening exhibition in the project space in new museum building that is part of the ambitious museum campus Platform 10 in Lausanne.

Taus Makhacheva is in conversation with Heidi Brunnschweiler, Head of the Visual Arts Department, Gallery of Contemporary Art, E-WERK Freiburg, and Nicole Schweizer, Curator of Contemporary Art, at MCBA Lausanne. We spoke about the time in lockdown, her installation in Lausanne and the importance of life-affirming practices, among other things.

Her installation 4’224,92 cm of Degas is on view in the project space of MCBA in Lausanne until 23 August 2020. Her solo exhibition at the Edith Russ Haus in Oldenburg will open on July 7 and will run until October 4, 2020. We are looking forward to meeting her soon in Freiburg on the occasion of a site-visit.
